So many people make New Year’s resolutions that they promptly drop before the month of January is done, even when those goals are set with the very best intentions. But, when you learn how to decide upon goals that really have a chance of coming to fruition, and then how to plan for the action-taking that’s then needed, you’ll be better placed to make 2017 successful.

1. Reflect. What Did You Accomplish This Past Year?
Start your new year planning session with the positives from this past year, as it will help get you into a good frame of mind. If you can see that you’ve accomplished a lot of what you set out to do, it will give you the driving force to keep going with some of those goals that may still lie just out of reach.
2. What Did Not Go Well Over This Last Year?
More than likely you set some goals that you didn’t achieve. It’s important to analyse these and try to determine why you didn’t reach them. Were they even realistic goals and aligned with your purpose? Did you make a good enough action plan to ensure you met each goal? Did you make too many other goals so that you simply did not have enough time?
3. Make a Short List of Things Youíd Like to Accomplish in the Upcoming Year
Now make a short list of no more than five things youíd like to accomplish this coming year. You might pick something youíve already been succeeding at that you want to continue and build upon for the New Year, or you might choose some things from the list that did not get finished. You may also choose to add completely new items to the list if you are branching out in other directions.
4. Make a List of Things You’re Going to Stop Doing
One reason some business goals aren’t accomplished is simply a lack of time. Therefore, you need to make room for these new 2017 goals. This requires you to make a list of things you’re not going to do anymore, so you’ll free up time for the new goals. For example, let’s say one of your new goals is to read 30 minutes a day, and last year you spent more than 30 minutes a day surfing Facebook. You might choose to end Facebook browsing for the year in favour of reading instead.
5. Refine Your To-Do List with Real Plans of Action
Here you need to take your list of five and narrow it down to one or two major things you really and truly want to get started on in the New Year. The way you’ll do this is to actually plan each thing out, step by step as to what needs to be done. Assuming you want to accomplish these items by the end of the year (at the latest), so start at that date. Then, moving backwards, make a plan of actions you need to take each day to actually achieve your goals.
6. Put Everything in Your Calendar
No plans will happen if they’re not down on paper or a digital calendar. Each step you need to take should be entered into the calendar. That way, any given day when you wake up in the morning, you simply look at the calendar and find out what you need to do. You don’t need to even worry about the end result, only focus what you are doing that day to contribute towards the big picture.
These easy-to-follow steps will help you reach your 2017 goals but remember, and the end of the day, it’s all about narrowing down what really matters, taking realistic action steps that you have time to work into your already busy day.
